Periodontics Residency , Saudi Arabian

I became a dentist because I wanted to ‘make a difference rather than merely to ‘make a living, and I have not been disappointed in my choice. This application is made to extend my skills and knowledge to fulfill my own professional potential and to, be able to offer the very best treatment to my patients, and to be in a position to pass my skills and knowledge, and enthusiasm for this area of work to junior colleagues and students.

My ultimate ambition is to combine teaching, research, and practice as an expert periodontic specialist. Periodontics is my specialty of choice for several reasons: It calls for creativity in the design and implementation of treatments, it involves the need for detailed planning in which I have a particular skill, and because it often consists of the sharing of knowledge and opinions with other dental specialists but the main reason it interests me is that it is still an emerging area of practice and research and one which often makes a dramatic difference to the lives of patients. I am very excited to be able to work in an area in which new techniques and materials are constantly emerging, and I am determined to be one of those making and sharing advances in this area of work to the very highest level.

I graduated with a B.D.S. from King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in June 2011. The University’s prestigious B.D.S program is very comprehensive and challenging and is very well regarded internationally. The program is a problem-based, self-directed learning approach, one that encouraged my growth as a dental professional able to succeed in all types of situations. Additionally, I learned search techniques to support evidence-based dentistry and received a strong background in the newest techniques and technologies.

During my 12 months internship, I served four months at the King Saud University as the intern responsible for the dental preparation of orthodontic patients, reflecting my interest in this area of work together with my confidence and easy relationship with patients. This experience allowed me to work alongside practiced consultants from different specialties; their insights were invaluable to me. In addition, at that time, I was also selected to act as leader of the interns, reflecting my ability to motivate and interest in helping my fellow students. I have also been called upon to exercise leadership roles several times since qualifying. I believe that this reflects the confidence of superiors that I can be relied upon to deal with others in a sensible and amiable but confident manner.

I was employed immediately after graduation at a well-known, private clinic in Saudi Arabia. I initially acted as an ‘On-Call’ dentist and was then as a Resident. In the latter role, I attended ORs and followed up on oral surgery cases. This exposed me to broad, general experience and provided me with an excellent base for my subsequent career.

Since then, I have broadened my experience, knowledge, and skills in several roles. I have worked in one of the most prestigious Tertiary Care hospitals, the King Fahad Medical City, where I was exposed to different kinds of medically compromised patients from various fields, including but not limited to; head and neck oncology, hematology, cardiology, and nephrology patients. I have also acted as the Assigned Resident, organizing the weekly continuous medical education sessions, exposing me to effective communication with various health care providers from differing specialties.

Since June 2014, I have been assigned as the interns’ and residents’ supervisor, working on their training program, arranging their schedules, supervising their general dental procedures, and arranging study sessions to discuss different articles and book reviews. During my time at KFMC, I was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for Best Resident in recognition of my outstanding commitment and dedicated service, and excellence in patient care.

In my current role as a demonstrator in the Department of Periodontics, I have acquired significant knowledge of the specialty, as was my intention. I have also gained some experience in teaching undergraduate students. I have greatly enjoyed teaching and believe that I have skills in passing on my knowledge and in enthusing and encouraging others to achieve their potential.

I look forward to honing and extending these teaching skills in the future.

I have worked on a range of community projects, including arranging a ‘Dental Awareness Day’ at King Fahad Medical City for all patients, visitors, and staff which was highly successful in spreading awareness of the need for preventive action and regular check-ups. I also took part in a charity project called ‘Generation Smile,’ which involved the provision of free dental care to child patients unable to afford it. I have also treated ‘Special Needs’ child patients, including autistic children. All these projects were successful and highly satisfying. I intend to give my time and skills to benefit those in need throughout my future career.

Currently, I have been accepted at the one-year International Fellowship Program in Advanced Periodontics at the University of XXXX, school of dentistry. The program started on July 1st, 2015, and it involves clinical, and didactic. Research training, and I am confident that this will expand my knowledge and clinical skills in periodontology and implantology and will provide me with basic skills in clinical research, which will also benefit me in my advanced study in periodontics.

I am very excited at the prospect of being a member of an international residency program in periodontics. I am fluent in English and look forward to using the language as the teaching medium and on a day-to-day basis. I must admit that I am not yet very widely traveled but am very keen to learn from others about their own cultures and share knowledge of my own. I am an outgoing, amiable person, with a good sense of humor, and I look forward to interacting both socially and academically with my classmates.

I look forward to being involved in some area of research during the program and am interested specifically in the Periodontal treatment for medically compromised patients.

I am convinced that I can ‘add value to the program by bringing insights from a wide range of professional experiences gained to date. I can assure the reader that I shall apply myself with great enthusiasm and diligence to the program. I believe that I have the potential to excel rather than merely succeed, if selected for the program, and will certainly seek to do so.
